Scientific Design (SD) makes a global impact on people and their communities by delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable
EO-based technologies. We are a Global Leader in the development, licensing, and catalyst supply of proprietary processes for the production of Ethylene Oxide (EO), Ethylene Glycol (EO/EG), Bio-Ethylene, Bio-EO, Bio-EG, EO derivatives, Polyols, and Maleic Anhydride. The chemicals produced by these technologies are the building blocks for a multitude of consumer products that improve the lives and health of millions. In addition to these technologies, SD produces innovative proprietary catalyst and equipment to be used in our own industrial processes and those used by our clients

With significant investment into Research & Development and many patents, we continue to innovate and provide solutions as a petrochemical technology leader for over 75 years. SD continues to improve upon its technologies to ensure our role as licensor of choice for clients who are committed to a better world through corporate responsibility and environmental sustainability.

Who Guides Us

Dr. Atieh Abu Raqabah
President & CEO

Atieh has had a distinguished career with notable experience in Research and Development. He joined SABIC in 1990 as a chemical advisor before advancing to leader of polymer catalysts. During his tenure with the company he has held several leadership roles at SABIC including General manager for Global Corporate Research & Development (R&D), General Manager for Corporate Sustainability, and Director for Polymers & Catalysis. Atieh founded the SABIC Research and Innovation Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and co-founded the first SABIC Technology Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He also led the development, scaling-up, and commercialization of several SABIC technologies, including Linear Alpha Olefins (LAO), Metallocene technology, TiNo PP catalyst and Circular Economy – TRUCIRCLE™. Atieh has also served as a board member on SABIC SK Nexlene Company Pte. Ltd.

Atieh won the SABIC Top Innovator Award and Arthur D. Little Award for Research Excellence. He is the inventor and co-inventor of more than 50 patents. He has also published numerous papers in scientific journals.

He joined Scientific Design in 2023.

Education

Atieh earned a PhD degree in Organometallic Chemistry from Northeastern University in Boston, Advanced Management Program (AMP) from INSEAD, and the Executive Leadership program from Harvard University.

James J. Farley, Jr.
Chief Financial Officer

Jim manages Scientific Design’s finance, supply chain, and IT functions. Prior to joining Scientific Design, Jim worked at Verizon as Supervisor of Corporate Books and NCR. Jim is an active community volunteer and coach.

He joined Scientific Design in 1988 as an Accounting Manager.

Education

Jim holds an MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University. He graduated Cum Laude with a BS from the University of Delaware.

David Bazzano
Vice President, Global Licensing & Sales

David is responsible for leading and directing Scientific Design’s full portfolio offering of products and services to the petrochemical industry, encompassing the Licensing, Catalyst, Revamp, and Equipment businesses. During his more than 15 years at Scientific Design, David has had roles in Engineering, Technical Services, Product Management, Catalyst, and Licensing.

He joined Scientific Design in 2007.

Education

David holds an MBA from Marist University and both a Masters in Chemical Engineering and BE from Stevens Institute of Technology, and a BS in Chemistry from New York University. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer.

Joseph J. Dotzman
Vice President, Manufacturing & Site Services

Joseph has more than 20 years of experience in Manufacturing. Prior to joining Scientific Design, he served as the director of Manufacturing for Benjamin Moore & Co. (a Berkshire Hathaway company) and Director of Operations, North America at BOC Edwards. Joseph held various roles in plant management and production for 5 years at General Motors Corporation. During his career he has been responsible for muti-site manufacturing operations with experience overseeing sites in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and China.

Joseph joined Scientific Design as a Production Manager in 2012.

Education

Joseph holds an MBA in Supply Chain Management from the University of Scranton and a BS in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University. 

Sanjeev Goyal
Vice President, Technology

Sanjeev has over 32 years of experience in EO/EG technology. He has been actively involved in the commissioning of several glycols plants and has lead projects across Scientific Design’s technology portfolio including ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol, ethanol dehydration, and maleic anhydride. Prior to joining Scientific Design, Sanjeev worked for India Glycols Ltd. and Reliance Industries in various technical and leadership positions.

He joined Scientific Design in 2006.

Education

Sanjeev holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology. He is also a certified Lead Quality Auditor from British Standards Institution.

Li “Julie” Zhu
Vice President, R&D

Julie has 17 years of industrial R&D experience with large global corporations. She most recently served as the Americas Leader for Analytical Science at SABIC, leading critical efforts to support both corporate and business R&D. She began her career at GE Global Research as a researcher and technical leader to develop early stage research into prototype and commercial products. Her experience encompasses applying technology and Innovation in chemical industry, catalyst R&D, chemical/polymer product development and process optimization. At Scientific Design, Julie is responsible for leading the R&D organization and focusing on new catalyst product development.

She joined Scientific Design in 2022.

Education

Julie holds a PhD from Louisiana State University, an Executive MBA from Rice University, and a BS from Nankai University.

Dan Augulis
Human Resources Leader

Dan has more than 20 years of experience in Human Resources. Prior to his time at Scientific Design, Dan spent 15 years at SABIC in a variety of HR roles. Dan has strong HR Partnering experience in manufacturing organizations and demonstrated skills in talent management, compensation strategies, project & change management, talent acquisition & deployment, organizational development, and coaching & facilitation.

Dan joined Scientific Design in 2023.

Education

Dan has a Masters in Organizational Behavior from Brigham Young University and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of California, Irvine. 

Mike Bruscino
Executive Sales Leader

Mike has over 35 years’ experience in the chemical industry. During Mike’s time at Scientific Design, he has held several positions in R&D, pilot plant supervision, process development, product director, catalyst sales and licensing. Recently Mike has focused on the development of new products and provided sales and marketing services for the commercialization of these products along with technical service to clients worldwide.

He joined Scientific Design in 1977.

Education

Mike holds an MS in Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College; BS in Chemistry from Montclair State University; and BS in Biology from Seton Hall University.

Carl Kumpe
Senior Business Counsel

Carl is responsible for Scientific Design’s legal affairs. He has 25 years of legal experience across a broad variety of industries. Prior to joining Scientific Design, he worked for Evonik Industries for 10 years as an intellectual property manager and senior counsel.

He is licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

He joined Scientific Design in 2023. 

Education

Carl holds a JDA from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law; and a BA in Biology from Oberlin College.

Where We Come From

Scientific Design’s history parallels that of the petrochemical industry: “a disruptive startup that invented the breakthrough technologies that would help usher in the petrochemical industry.” Robert Westervelt, Chemical Week. This entrepreneurial and innovative spirit has driven, developed, and grown SD for more than three quarters of a century.

    Halcon International Company, Inc. (HIC)/Scientific Design designed the first renewable Ethylene technology in India.

    Halcon International Company, Inc. (HIC)/Scientific Design became the first company to License EO/EG Plant in China

    Halcon International Company, Inc. (HIC)/Scientific Design Group discovered high yield direct Ethylene Oxide process.

    Halcon International Company, Inc. (HIC) partnered with Atlantic Richfield Co. (Arco) to form Oxirane, to produce propylene oxide, styrene, and tert-Butyl alcohol.
