Deon has thirty years of experience in the chemical industry including the past twenty years in key leadership roles with BASF Corporation. Deon was most recently the Sr. Vice President of BASF’s North America Performance Chemicals business. Prior to that Deon was Sr. Vice President for BASF’s precious metals services business. For more than ten years, Deon has led several different catalyst businesses, beginning with a leadership role in Italy manufacturing and recycling precious metal catalyst, and advancing through successively more prominent leadership positions as Global Director, General Manager and Vice President of Engelhard’s/BASF’s chemical, polyolefins, and refining catalysts business.
Deon holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town.
Vice President of Licensing, Engineering and Technical Services
Mark Reno has over 40 years of experience in technology delivery positions of increasing responsibility with UOP LLC. His career covered the entire spectrum of operations at UOP including senior management positions in R&D, Engineering, Technical service and Sales. Mark was a key part of several business development efforts that resulted in acquisitions of complimentary technology to expand UOP’s portfolio. Much of Mark’s career was spent in assignments outside of the US where he established sales support operations in the United Kingdom. He was a key member of the team that built sales and service operations in Dubai and was the Managing Director for an environmental startup based in Canada.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
Gus T. Hampilos
General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
Gus has more than 35 of experience practicing law, during which he has held variety of increasingly responsible positions at chemical companies including AlliedSignal (Honeywell), Union Carbide (Dow Chemical), and Engelhard (BASF). Among the positions he has held include Associate General Counsel at AlliedSignal Inc. (Honeywell) and Chief IP Counsel at Engelhard Corporation. Most recently, Gus was Vice President, Legal for a privately held chemical company. His experience encompasses US and foreign litigation, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property matters, technology licensing, equipment leasing, plant construction, and a variety of commercial transactional matters.
Gus received his law degree from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, and has a BS degree in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Director, Human Resources
Eric has 20 years of experience in Human Resources. Eric has held various Human Resource positions at Accenture, Cytec Industries and joined Scientific Design in 2007. Eric has experience in many disciplines within HR including: Recruiting, Succession Planning; Compensation Management; Employee Relations; Benefit plan designs and Training and Development.
Eric has a Masters in Industrial Labor Relations (M.I.L.R.) from Cornell University and a B.S. Degree in Psychology from the State University of New York at Albany.
Vice President, Manufacturing & Site Services
Mark has over 30 years of experience in the chemical industry with focused on inorganic surface chemistry. Mark’s career path includes positions of increasing leadership accountability for all aspects of Manufacturing Operations and Technology. Mark started his career with Monsanto Chemical Company followed by Engelhard Corporation and BASF SE and includes working with manufacturing organizations in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the United States.
His most recent role was Director, Manufacturing and Business Process Improvement for BASF’s Catalyst Division where he provided leadership in the areas of Environmental, Health and Safety; Capital Planning; New Manufacturing Technology Development, and Operational Excellence.
Mark holds a B.A. in Chemistry from David Lipscomp University and an M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Vanderbilt University, both located in Nashville, Tennessee.
Global Director, Licensing
Mike has over 35 years’ experience in the chemical industry. During Mike’s time at Scientific Design, he has held several positions in R&D, pilot plant supervision, process development, product director, catalyst sales and licensing. Recently Mike has focused on the development of new products and provided sales and marketing services for the commercialization of these products along with technical service to clients worldwide.
Mike holds a Master of Science, Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College, Bachelor of Science, Chemistry, Montclair State University and Bachelor of Science, Biology, Seton Hall University.
Dr. Ashok S. Padia
Vice President, Catalyst Sales
Ashok has over 35 years of experience in the petrochemical industry. He has served as Director of Licensing, responsible for licensing Scientific Design’s various Petrochemical Technologies for almost 10 years before becoming the head of Scientific Design’s Catalyst business. Ashok has authored more than 12 scientific papers in the field of energy, catalysis and process improvements and is an inventor of 3 US patents.
Ashok holds a Doctor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Vice President, Technology
Sanjeev has over 27 years of experience in EO/ EG technology. He has been actively involved in the commissioning of some of the mega glycols plants and has lead projects across Scientific Design’s technology portfolio including ethylene oxide/ ethylene glycol, ethanol dehydration, and maleic anhydride. Prior to joining Scientific Design in 2006, Sanjeev worked for India Glycols Ltd. and Reliance Industries at various technical and leadership positions.
Sanjeev holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology. He is also a certified Lead Quality Auditor from British Standards Institution.
James (Jim) J. Farley Jr.
Vice President, Finance & Administration
Jim manages Scientific Design’s finance, supply chain, and IT functions. He joined Scientific Design in 1988 as an Accounting Manager. Prior to joining Scientific Design, Jim worked at Verizon as Supervisor of Corporate Books and NCR. Jim is an active community volunteer and coach.
Jim holds an M.B.A. from Farleigh Dickinson University. He graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. from the University of Delaware.
Vice President, Research & Development
Thomas joined Scientific Design as Assistant Director, Research & Development in 2014. Thomas spent the previous 14 years in catalysis with Engelhard Corporation, now BASF SE, in Iselin NJ in several roles in Research and Development, Innovation Management, and New Business Development. Prior to that, he spent 10 years in Research and Development for the polypropylene leader HIMONT/Montell (now LyondellBasell) in Elkton MD.
Thomas has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a PhD in Chemical Engineering the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
