Since its founding in 1946, Scientific Design Company, Inc. has been one of the world’s leading process technology and catalyst development companies. SD has developed some of the petrochemical industry’s most significant process technologies, which are used today to produce millions of tons of petrochemical intermediates in numerous licensed process plants worldwide. With more than 80 employees, the company has recorded sales in the double-digit million range in recent years.

In March 2003, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and Süd-Chemie AG formed a partnership for the acquisition of Scientific Design Company Inc. from Linde AG. Under this changed ownership, Scientific Design remains an independent entity and continues to license its processes, provide engineering services and sell catalysts to its clients worldwide. SABIC and Süd-Chemie manage Scientific Design Company Inc. through a fifty-fifty joint venture

Our facilities are located on 7 acres in Little Ferry, New Jersey, approximately 4 miles west of New York City. These consist of a catalyst production plant, a state-of-the-art research center, an administration building, an engineering and sales building and a library. A warehouse for storage and shipping is located in Little Ferry, a mile away from our main campus.

SD serves a wide variety of clients, ranging from those new to chemical production to well-established chemical and oil companies; plants using our processes and catalysts operate on six continents. SD clients include many of the world’s largest chemical companies, including recognized names such as Bayer, Huntsman, Hyundai, Indian Petrochemicals Corporation, Nan Ya Plastics, PEMEX, PETROCHINA, SABIC, SINOPEC, Samsung and many others. SD is particularly proud of the vital technical services provided to companies in many developing countries.
